Le Spot On… Masters At Work [Pt.1]

Posted the 18th mars 2014 by in LE SPOT ON...

The name sums it all, there is music before, and music after the MASTERS AT WORK
Saying that they are influential is a weak word… They are the Masters! The originators of New York HOUSE MUSIC. They are HOUSE MUSIC… and they changed our lives forever…

The duet is made of KENNY DOPE GONZALEZ and LITTLE LOUIE VEGA. They first worked together using the MAW name, which had been given to them by mutual friend TODD TERRY (who recorded several tracks under that name during the 1980s), in 1990.

Gonzalez started his DJ career in 1985 organising neighbourhood block parties in his home of Brooklyn, New York, with his then musical partner, MIKE DELGADO. Under the MASTERS AT WORK moniker, the parties became quite successful and attracted TODD TERRY who later borrowed the group’s name for two record releases. Terry returned the favour at a later date when he loaned Gonzalez a drum machine, which began his interest in producing beats.

On his side, Louie who is cousin to ERIC VEGA, popular event creator and promoter in New York City began playing house and block parties by 1985 in his local Bronx neighbourhood of New York, as well as engineering and mixing. His first nightclub residency was at the DEVIL’S NEST, in the Bronx, and later he moved to Roseland, STUDIO 54 and THE PALLADIUM in Manhattan.
The duo also produced music together under the names MAW, KENLOU, SOLE FUSION, HARDRIVE, and NUYORICAN SOUL.

To start off this first episode and as an introduction, we are going to go back in time around 1994 and on, and explore their early work. Open your ears and Soul in respect… The Masters are at work… Enjoy ;)
